Capacity to manage change and consolidation of conflict-management in Bolivia

Partners
Green Left and Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS-IPSP)

Green Left has worked together with the Movement for Socialism in Bolivia (MAS-IPSP) since 2014 and completed the final activities of the partnership in 2019. The partnership aimed to strengthen the internal democratic capacity building of MAS-IPSP. The final part of the partnership also focused on conflict management.

Partnership Facts

Danish partner: Green Left

Local partner: Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS-IPSP)

Project: 2014 - 2019

In an effort to mitigate a political culture where disagreements often lead to confrontations, MAS-IPSP wished to strengthen its ability to handle internal conflicts. As a response to this, the Green Left and MAS-IPSP cooperatively trained party members to become conflict facilitators. 22 people were educated as conflict facilitators at a local level through workshops across several regions. Learning material was developed for the trainings and can be used by MAS-IPSP in future workshops, even after the termination of the partnership with the Green Left.

The attendees all said that it had become easier to manage conflict and avoid confrontation, both on a personal and professional level. An important result of changing the deep-rooted culture both at the party and country levels is that many of the facilitators have subsequently moved on to high-level positions in important institutions. In these positions, they will be able to draw on their skills and contribute to a better political dialogue.

One of the successes of the conflict management component of the partnership was getting the leadership of MAS-IPSP to support the initiative. Green Left has supported MAS-IPSP with their competence in conflict management through several activities and workshops. This has led to a general increase in the capacity of the movement to handle conflicts and promote democratic party structures.
