Ready to govern locally in South Africa

Partners
The Liberal Party, Democratic Alliance

Moving from being an opposition party to gaining power poses new challenges. The Liberal Party and Democratic Alliance exchange knowledge on how to govern locally.

The Danish Liberal Party cooperates with the biggest opposition party in South Africa, Democratic Alliance (DA). DA is liberal party and good governance, economic freedom, and opportunities for all communities and races are core elements in their party program. The party has in recent years experienced a growing electoral support, especially at local level and is now in charge in a few municipalities and provinces.

Partnership Facts

Danish partner: The Liberal Party

Local partners: Democratic Alliance

Project start: 2018

The aim of the partnership is therefore to strengthen the DA’s capacity to run local municipalities, and thus contributing to improving the political system, reducing nepotism and corruption at local level. The Danish Liberal Party currently leads a large part of the municipalities in Denmark and has several generations of experience with governance at the local level - very often in coalitions. The project combines one of the strengths of the Danish Liberal Party with a clear need in DA under the headline: Ready to govern locally.

To build capacities the partnership centers around experience sharing. The two parties work together in creating study tours both to Denmark and South Africa. In these sessions they share experiences on local democracy and the role as an opposition party both when having the power and not.
